The Golden Age of Tech Blogging (2009 - 2011) Posted: 30 Dec 2011 11:30 AM PST  The Web publishing world was saddened to wake up this morning to the news from three nights earlier, repeated from a presumably reputable source, of the passing of the Golden Age of Tech Blogging. The Age apparently succumbed to complications following a series of seismic shifts in the industry, brought on by corporate media interests who, despite all evidence to the contrary, continue to believe they can make money publishing blogs.
Casualties include various editors for some of the industry's most renowned publications for several weeks running, who have evidently been hired by identically-sounding media firms to produce similar-looking publications, with equally ambiguous editorial responsibilities.

 The Age's passing is being marked by a period of extended bickering in comments sections across the Web over the meaning of "age," "blogging," and "tech" in their respective contexts. In keeping with the style of argument that marked the heyday of the Age, none of these arguments have reached any conclusions, though many were declared "idiots." Such an extraordinary amount of turmoil and upheaval, it is believed, is unprecedented for this period in world history, which has otherwise been characterized by peace, stability, economic well-being, the eradication of hunger, and freedom from strife. Indeed, compared to the upbeat and forward-thinking spirit of the automobile industry, the sound strategy and sure-footedness of the financial industry, the bold and innovative stance of the media industry, the strength and resolve of our infrastructure, and the comity and brotherhood that has characterized the most productive period of legislative accomplishments at any time since the Dawn of Humankind, the passing of the Golden Age of Tech Blogging is a rare blot, a pimple on the face of progress. Things would have been so perfect this year, but alas. Gone, gone are the names that once rolled off of Web readers' tongues, the bylines that built an Age of magnificence, of greatness, of headlines so brilliant that they nearly crossed the threshold into truth. All the great editors of this-and-such - can't you recall them as though they were only here yesterday? A list of several of those names was being recollected for this article, but woefully had already been forgotten by press time. As a tribute to those great names, to the fallen ones who once relied solely upon themselves for expertise, illumination, and biting wit, I have called upon the most conveniently available expert on the topic of the Golden Age to shed more light upon it. Self: How do you do? Me: Greetings, self. Self, tell us how the passing of this Golden Age compares to the passings of other ages? Self: Well, as you'll recall, there was the End of the Geocities Era in April 2009, during which the End of Blogging For All Time was predicted. Me: Oh, yes. Terrible! Self: Then two months earlier came the Death of Web 2.0, which was marked by a long period of public mourning. Me: Yes, I remember many members of my family sought my help in reverting to Web 1.7. Self: Then there was The Day the Web Died, on account of CBS' purchase of CNET Networks in 2008. Me: And of course, who can forget the Bubble? Self: The what? Me: The Bubble, you know, the one that burst in 2001. Self: Oh yes, the End of the Internet as We Know It. As I recall, what brought that on was an over-investment in entities that had unsubstantiated business plans - they didn't really know how they would earn revenue. Me: And of course, that mistake could never be repeated again. Self: Naturally. Of course, it's too late now anyway, with the Golden Age having passed. Me: Now, according to Wikipedia, there were prior technological eras during which people reportedly walked on the moon; and before that, there were - again, reportedly - major public infrastructure projects which resulted in the building of dams and the construction of lakes and waterways. Self: Yes, but you're forgetting that due to the absence of available bloggers during that prehistoric period, there's considerable doubt over whether these events actually happened. Me: But it was during the Golden Age that such doubts were elevated to their rightful place alongside the truth. Self: Indeed. During the Age, one could produce a headline such as, "Man Never Walked On Moon." Me: Ah-ah-ah! Don't forget the question mark! Self: Oh, yes, forsooth I shan't. It was a common practice in this period, when there wasn't enough time between now and lunch to seek an outside source, to simply run with the headline with a question mark at the end. Me: Which was good, because then you'd get a lot of comments. Self: Mostly from readers who would be insulted by, for instance, the gender-insensitivity of the headline. Me: So you would replace that - Self: - publish a whole new story, "People Never Walked On Moon," question mark. Me: Assuming for the sake of hypothesis that these technological events did happen - the moon landing, Hoover Dam - Self: D-Day, the splitting of the atom - Me: How do they relate by comparison to the technological events we attached question marks to during the Golden Age? Self: Well, Buzz Aldrin couldn't exactly tweet his good fortune from the Sea of Tranquility, now, could he? Nor could he play a round of "Angry Birds" while sitting at the foot of the lunar lander. Me: Very good point. Boy, wouldn't that have made all the difference! Self: Perhaps it did. "Aldrin Aced 'Ham-'em-High' Level from Lunar Surface," question mark. Me: Now, we haven't seen an official autopsy report yet, so do we know what the actual cause of passing was? Self: For what? Me: The Golden Age, the latest one. Self: Oh, yes. Sorry, I lost my train of time there. Well, we do have some evidence. There was a report by Sarah Lacy earlier this week - Me: Sarah Lacy! Yes, she was one of the names on my list! Do we know if she's all right? Self: She's fine, she made it through. Me: Thank heavens! Self: Sarah mentioned how with the business model of blogs during the Golden Age, the more popular a blog became, the more distributed its ad inventory grew, and as a result, the less money each ad generated. Me: That sounds like the business model used to equalize the revenue from farming, just after the Russian Revolution. Self: True, socialism had been enjoying a brief reprise during the Golden Age. Me: And that all ended with the surge of corporate interests. Self: Money, as you know, is the root of all corruption. Now, it would appear the capitalists have come home to roost, and who knows what the fate of the Free and Open Web will be now that money has entered the picture. Me: Who knows, question mark!  | | Hosting a WordPress Blog on OpenShift Posted: 30 Dec 2011 11:00 AM PST  If you’re using WordPress, the options you are mostly likely to use are to run your own stack, use a shared hosting provider that offers WordPress or to go with WordPress.com. With the rise of PaaS offerings like OpenShift, though, why not run WordPress there?
As it stands, most PaaS providers are largely targeted at custom code rather than packages like WordPress. But that doesn’t mean you can’t get WordPress up and running, as Amit Shah demonstrated by moving his WordPress blog to OpenShift. Sponsor
 Actually, he was moving from Blogger to WordPress, which makes it even more interesting. Shah gives a detailed explanation of how he moved his blog to OpenShift, including the commands to grab PHP, MySQL, add domains and set up the directory for WordPress. Why would you want to do this? Scalability is one thing. I’m running a WordPress instance on Linode right now, and I can add resources if I want but it requires manual intervention and stopping/restarting the VPS to make changes. Hosting on a PaaS should mean you can scale up/down dynamically with no downtime. It also means that the PaaS provider will take care of all the security updates. That’s true, or should be, if you’re using shared hosting or WordPress.com. However, the trade-off for shared hosting means that you’re on a server with who knows how many other users. It also offers much less flexibility. WordPress.com offers plenty of scalability, but again has much less flexibility in terms of what you can do (like install custom plugins, etc.). One of the trends I’m hoping to see in 2012 is for projects like WordPress to be easily deployed on PaaS services. Discuss 
 | | 5 Things Dropbox Competitors Need Posted: 30 Dec 2011 09:32 AM PST  I got all excited this morning when I saw a link on Hacker News to BitPocket, one of the latest so-called “DIY Dropbox” offerings that’s open source. The excitement faded pretty quickly when I hit the GitHub repo and found that it’s just a “small but smart script that does 2-way directory synchronization” without most of the Dropbox features.
Dropbox didn’t get where it is today by being a wrapper for rsync, Git, Unison or any of the other open source tools for file synchronization. If you want to replicate Dropbox’s suceess, there’s a few features that are mandatory. Sponsor
 Top-Notch Synchronization The biggest failing that Bitpocket has is the lack of automatic sync. As I’m writing this post (in Vim, using Markdown on my MacBook Pro), Dropbox is syncing it with my iMac and my Linux Mint computer as well as with the Dropbox service. It’s doing it silently, without any intervention or extra setup on my part. Before Dropbox, I used rsync over SSH to sync my files to rsync.net and my other computers. It was workable, but not particularly convenient. It took about ten minutes for me to decide to plunk down the monthly fee for Dropbox after discovering the LAN sync feature in Dropbox. Another feature that any Dropbox challenger needs? Platform ubiquity. If it doesn’t run on Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, iOS and Android, I’m not interested. Technically, I’m actually OK with a service that doesn’t run on Windows, but the sheer number of folks who use Windows means that any Dropbox alternative is pretty much DOA without a Windows client. And there’s very little attraction to any tool that doesn’t sync with my mobile device. Web Access If I’m not on a computer I control, I still want to be able to get to a file in a pinch. Dropbox’s Web interface is perfect for the few times I don’t have my own computer handy, or haven’t gotten around to installing Dropbox yet. Since I tend to do a lot of testing, it’s not uncommon for me to set up a new box without wanting to hassle with installing Dropbox when I’m going to be wiping a system in a few days. (Not that Dropbox is all that hard to install.) Revision Control and File Restore Revision control and file restore are features I don’t use often, but are worth the price of Dropbox even if I use them just twice a year. I admit it, I’ve fat-fingered rm once or twice in 2011, and saved over a file in LibreOffice that I didn’t mean to. Revision control and file restore mean that I’ve been able to recover gracefully with zero loss of data. Unless an alternative can give me that, I’m not switching. Sharing Finally, I need to be able to share files with co-workers and friends. Dropbox makes this dirt simple, even for other folks that don’t use Dropbox. Falling Short Bitpocket and other sync scripts and tools may be acceptable for some use cases, but they don’t rise to the “Dropbox” label. Up-and-coming projects like SparkleShare may be nifty collaboration tools, but they’re not a Dropbox replacement. I’d love to see an open source, DIY alternative to Dropbox, but so far none have come close. Discuss

Frictionless sharing is not the only problem, but it's the straw that broke the proverbial dromedary's back. Passive sharing is not a feature I hear other users clamoring for. The value of observing every action online is of little value to users, but of far too much value to Facebook and the lot. Sometimes you want to control your audience, but Facebook's privacy controls are so complex it's never quite clear who can and can't see your messages. You're not assured that someone will or won't see a message, at all. Social Media as Game of Telephone Social media means, more than ever, little control of your message. As an individual, you surrender control of distribution. As publisher, you surrender the notion that the receiver will have actually read the source. Too often, I've noticed that I garner far more feedback on articles via Google Plus and Facebook than on the site that hosts the articles. This would be fine, except for one little problem – all too few of the commentators take the time to actually read the article or post in question. This becomes abundantly clear when you see howls of outrage in response to features on The Onion because the reader had no idea they were responding to a satirical article. My friends in PR and marketing may complain that companies are losing control of their message. Some argue that it's well and fine that companies lose control of their message, because it forces engagement directly with the audience. That's true, as far as it goes, but it misses the larger point. Social media has not only wrested control of message, it's made it incredibly difficult to ensure accuracy of the message. It's one thing that organizations have less ability to spin, yet another when they're faced with a 21st century game of telephone. 
When a publication gets things wrong, a correction may not receive the same level of attention as an inaccurate headline or story. But when a tweet heard round the world is wrong, making a correction is next to impossible. That's not the only problem with using a handful of social media tools as the hub of conversation and information discovery.
Expression Depends on Tools Marshall McLuhan said "the medium is the message," and he wasn't wrong. How you say something, the medium that you choose, is often as important as what you say. And, of course, what you say is shaped by where you say it. Our dependence on social media means that we have to conform our messages to the tools, with the predictable deleterious results. Just by broadcasting your thoughts on a social network, your message is shaped and colored by that medium. Twitter is immediate, short and ephemeral. It's sending smoke signals in the hopes they'll be received and relayed. Conversations are terse by necessity. I enjoy the challenge, sometimes, of fitting a thought into 140 characters (chalk it up to J-School damage). It's of limited value when there's more to share than fits in 140 characters, but by limiting its scope I think Twitter also limits the damage. No one expects to carry on all of their conversations on Twitter. Privacy Roulette The same can't be said for Facebook, which would happily engulf all of our online discourse, and then some. Facebook allows for more lengthy discourse, and the ability to "like" (but not dislike) a sender's message. Comments, however, are mandatory. It's always somewhat unclear who will receive your message, given Facebook's ever-shifting privacy policies and controls. You cannot simply pick up and re-host your content on a competing network. You can take your toys and go home, but you can't play with them there. Call it privacy roulette. Sometimes you want your updates to be received by everyone, but Facebook opts to display them only to a sliver of your audience based on its importance algorithms. Sometimes you want to control your audience, but Facebook's privacy controls are so complex it's never quite clear who can and can't see your messages. You're not assured that someone will or won't see a message, at all. Google Plus is more straightforward, but the oracle in Mountain View has decreed that we must all be our literal selves online and not more comfortable pseudonymous personas. Businesses, as of yet, have no presence at all except through their spokespeople. While this suggests that communications from companies will be "more personal" it also forces the identity of a company onto the individual. If Acme Corporation hopes to have a voice on Google Plus, it must do so via its employees.  Google Plus has, in my opinion, better technical tools for expression and better privacy options, with the exception of its onerous pseudonym policies (and vigorous enforcement). Google also has well-publicized tools for extracting your data, should you choose to leave Google Plus. However, this is not the same thing as being able to extract your data from, say, WordPress. You cannot simply pick up and re-host your content on a competing network. You can take your toys and go home, but you can't play with them there.
In all cases, you surrender control of your platform to the owner of the network. This is illustrated quite well by the collapse of MySpace. Bands (it always seems to be bands) that built up a following on MySpace cannot easily move that following to another social network, or to their own site. Companies that build up a loyal following on Twitter or Facebook (they're not yet welcome on Google Plus) can't move that following to a competing network. Feeding the Beast The problems I've mentioned so far would not be so bad if social media were avoidable. Companies and media are embracing, out of necessity, the intermediaries as a way to reach the audience we wish to connect with. As Adrian Short so rightly pointed out, avoiding social media is not an option for most individuals or companies. "We need to use social networks to get heard and this forces us into digital serfdom." The right to avoid social networks, as Short says, is the right to be ignored. 
Indeed, it's a vicious cycle. If you're not on Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Google Plus or whatever comes, then your chances of being "heard" are far more remote than just a few years ago. Holding out seems futile, participating makes the problem worse. Short asks how long before social networks are essential, I'd argue they already are, but only because we've collectively decided that it's OK. You Get the Web You Deserve Like Short, I'm not sure I have an answer except this: moderation. We cannot depend on Facebook to be moderate in its attempts to be the center of the Web. The answer is not a kinder, gentler and less privacy abusive alternative to Facebook. The answer is to moderate our use of and dependence on Facebook. Like moderating diet, drink, television consumption or any other pleasurable but ultimately damaging-if-done-in-excess activity it is up to individuals. If we cannot do this, the fault lies only with us. The damage being done by excessive social media is every bit as real as the damage done by a steady diet of bacon cheeseburgers and no exercise, and just as slow to become obvious. Frictionless sharing is the cardiac event that should signal it's time to cut back on the endless diet of bacon cheeseburgers. Stop feeding the beast, and start using social media in moderation. This isn't a completely new problem. In 1980, I took my second job, about two years after I started work at a consulting firm in Washington, DC. My father was not happy about the switch. He was working as an accountant for the same place (and ended up putting in 30 years by the time he eventually retired, yes complete with gold watch that I have somewhere).  A CIO quoted in Marsan's article mentions how turnover is his biggest issue: "knowledge keeps walking out the door." I wondered if what he paid his developers was one of the reasons for the huge turnover. All of his six-person team has been with him for less than a year. But it turns out his particular issues aren't so simple. Part of the problem is that loyalty is so over. Back in my dad's day, you wanted to amass a retirement portfolio, or get more vacation time, or other benefits of being with a firm for decades. Now, those seem old-fashioned, and there are fewer pension plans and more contract workers. Hypergrowth is what matters. Getting challenged, learning stuff. Layoffs can happen at a moment's notice, making more of a "what's in it for me" attitude. The CIO interviewed in Marsan's article spoke about a very different developer mindset for today's 20-something coders. "There have been a number of cases where we have had a system that runs into issues, bugs, defects or a major change requirement. We thought it would be a challenge for a developer to own it. But their first reaction is to want to scrap it and start over." Another problem is that we expect instant gratification in our work lives. We can download what we need almost immediately from the Internet. If we don't get super-fast bandwidth and sub-second response times from our computer we get frustrated. If it takes more than a few minutes to understand something, we move on. I have noticed this in my own use of apps recently: I get very impatient when I can't understand something at first, and tend to drop products that have even a modest learning curve. (This is one of the reasons why Second Life went nowhere: it was a lot to learn at once.) One often-heard demand is for better workplace flex times. Back when I was in my 20s, I worked day and night sometimes to get projects done. There was no such thing as 9-to-5, telecommuting, or flexible Fridays. Today's GenY wants it all. IT has to do a better job explaining the business context of their code and be engaged in what the company is actually doing with their apps. Coding just for coding's sake is passé, as it should be. Granted, this was true back in my formative years, but it has gotten more important as IT has become more of a distributed operation, and coders are closer to their departments. Certainly, it is a delicate balance to train and retain highly technical people. But it does seem as if these times have made it more of a challenge. What has been your experience? Discuss

At one of Microsoft's sessions on HTML5 and CSS3 a few weeks ago, the lead program manager for Internet Explorer 10, John Hrvatin, was introducing Web developers to the basic concepts of layout. These were folks who held up their hands to show they've built Web sites for a decade or more. And for many of them, this was the first experience they ever had in considering the following elements: Column flow. White space. Gutter adjustment. Pagination. Visibility at a distance. Symmetry. The reason HTML5 (in all its many manifestations) is such a foreign object to so many companies, especially publishers, is because we have gone so long without acknowledging these basic elements of style that they have ceased to be part of our diet. Blogs, which house a majority of the Web's daily content, are the fast food of today's publishing society. They give publishers a convenient means for manufacturing roughly uniform, bite-size chunks of content in a long, single column. And in turn, they give aggregators such as Google News and now, even more prominently, Facebook an easy means for repackaging and broadcasting that content to whatever passes today for a mass audience. The blog format relieves publishers from the tiresome duty of producing covers and front pages and things to make their content more attractive and attract readers. In some cases, it enables publishers to surrender any responsibility for making content attractive in the first place. There is a prophetic scene in the magnificent movie "Wall-E" where, after having floated in space for centuries in a self-contained shopping mall, the remains of the human race return to Earth. There, upon realizing that food once grew on trees and that trees must be cared for, the people ponder for the first time in their lives just how the pizza and ice cream sprouted forth from these stem-like thingies. 
This is what sitting in that room for the Microsoft session reminded me of. Here, Hrvatin was preaching principles I've believed my entire career: that an online publication should become functional, like software, and that software should become informative and balanced, like a magazine. HTML5 restores to the public conscience all those prospects and possibilities we publishers lost sight of when we became bloggers: 1. Not all articles should be created equal. Blogs are conveyor belts for nuggets of text. But a major news story, a feature on how to build a private cloud in your office, an interview with a mobile app developer, and some guy ranting about the stupidity of the blog format, are different beasts with varying life spans. Longer-living articles should be allowed to live longer, rather than being dumped off the conveyor belt into the void when replacements come along. HTML5 offers the possibility of componentized, two-dimensional layout where the Table of Contents can live and breathe again. 2. Publications are packages. The great thing about the magazine was that the reader tended to consume most or all of it. Readers appreciated it as a whole. Blogs are designed to be entered through the middle, into the meat of an article, and then exited through-and-through like a bullet. Even regular readers of a blog find themselves entering and exiting, letting their aggregator of choice lead the way. By reviving an old concept of scaling components to suit flexible-sized containers, HTML5 enables tables of contents to zoom in and out of unused spaces, so that readers entering through the middle are treated to the entire package. 3. An article does not have to be an "article." In a blog, anything functional - a video, a podcast, an interactive chart - must be embedded in the text, and the frame and context for the functional element must fit within whatever the text allows. This is, and has always been, backwards. HTML5 recognizes, and to at least some extent addresses, the fact that functional elements do not belong in static containers. In other words, apps are not text. So if a publisher wants to at least try to produce a piece of useful software as a feature of its publication, it need not be concerned with the syntax of the embed tag or the requirements of the plug-in. HTML5 offers a glimpse of the freedom to define the Web publication the way it should have been defined fifteen years ago: as a more functional descendant of the magazine and the broadcast. But it can only do so to the extent that the content management systems upon which publishers have entrusted their livelihoods embrace, incorporate and advance that vision. This is not a certainty; in fact, I fear it's not even a likelihood. The CMS of today is a machine that produces blogs, that shapes and forms content to equal-sized nuggets dropped onto a conveyor belt, the length of which constitutes the duration of their natural lives. It's about as prepared to embrace the full prospect of HTML5 as government is prepared to embrace "change." As long as Web publishers continue to rely on today's CMS to define the nature of their content, they'll remain stuck in deep space aboard the Starship Buy 'n' Large. Discuss
